Taiwan Journal of Anthropology

The Taiwan Journal of Anthropology (TJA; or 臺灣人類學刊 in Chinese) is a peer reviewed publication of the Institute of Ethnology at Academia Sinica. The bilingual (Chinese and English) journal’s editorial committee is composed of anthropologists from Academia Sinica, as well as with various colleges and universities and overseas.

The purpose of TJA is to provide a major anthropological forum that bridges developments in contemporary international anthropology between Chinese and English audiences. Primarily devoted to sociocultural anthropology, TJA seeks to bring interesting and exciting new anthropological findings to the global audience. TJA is an international bilingual journal that publishes Chinese and English articles addressing theoretical, empirical and ethnographic issues in all sub-fields of anthropology.

The Institute of Ethnology traces its roots as a department in Academia Sinica back to 1928. The institute in its current institutional form was established in 1965.

ACADEMIC MISSION

The development plan of the Institute looks in three principal directions for the medium/long term:

  • Expanding geographic and cultural areas for comparative studies: Areas such as East Asia (including China), Southeast Asia, and Oceania are current study targets. Latin America, Africa, Europe, and the Middle East will be studied in the future.

  • Deepening research levels: Past research emphasized narratives in social organization. We are now emphasizing other aspects of cultural research, particularly cultural classifications and cultural logics, and the interfaces between culture and cognition (such as unconscious levels of cognition and sentiment).

  • Integrating historical and social contexts of socio-cultural development: Topics of research include the development of capitalism (including globalization issues), modern nationalism, and Christianization.

RESEARCH FELLOWS & RESEARCH GROUPS

There are currently 29 full-time research fellows at the Institute. Research fellows are free to develop independent projects in their areas of specialization. In addition to individual research projects, the Institute also promotes integrated group projects in cooperation with other institutes in Academia Sinica as well as with various colleges and universities. We use teamwork to explore forward-looking research topics and perform far-reaching in-depth research. Cooperative research projects currently underway include:

  • The Orchid Island Research Team

  • Medicine and Body Experience

  • State Formation

  • Hierarchy and Power

  • Historical Anthropology

  • Narration: From Reading to Performance

  • Rethinking Boundaries: Historical and Cultural Processes at the Chinese Margins

  • Team for Indigenous Psychological Healing Research

TAIWAN JOURNAL OF ANTHROPOLOGY

The journal is based on the venerable editorial tradition of its predecessor, the Bulletin of the Institute of Ethnology, to publish peer-reviewed research articles, review articles, research notes, comments and replies, and selected book reviews. Since its establishment, more than eighty monographs and ninety issues of the Bulletin of the Institute of Ethnology have been published. In 2002, the Bulletin was renamed the Taiwan Journal of Anthropology. The first and second issues were published in 2003.

TJA invites anthropologists and scholars in other disciplines---who wish to engage in dialogue with anthropologists, to submit their work for publication. We seek and appreciate greatly your general support, through submissions, subscriptions, and comments.
